Advantages of Home Visit Doctors in Dubai

From the earliest times, doctors visited their patients at home to provide care; there were no hospitals, and people, especially those who could not walk, received medical assistance at home. In the middle Ages, the first hospitals arose and gradually developed. In the nineteenth century, especially in its second and final half, medical visits to the home were gradually decreasing.

However, the trend for home visit doctors in Dubai is now developing not only all over Dubai but also throughout the world.

Assessment and care of acute diseases in cases where the patient has difficulty moving to the clinic because he is very sick or weak, has severe pain, is very old, or his problem may be exacerbated by movement and need immediate treatment or rest. At the request of the patient or relatives, the home visit doctors Dubai available at Health Call can be called on as required. The home visit doctors visit the patient to treat acute diseases and allow them to evaluate the conditions of the home and family support to decide whether or not to treat the patient at home or admit him to hospital, if necessary.

In this article, we will explain reasons and advantages of home visit Doctors in Dubai available at Health Call.

There are a multitude of advantages of home visit doctors in Dubai and medical care including the following:

  • The visit to the home allows the Doctor to obtain a lot of information about the family unit and how it functions, the interaction of its family members and the role of the patient. This cannot be achieved in the artificial environment such as hospital. There is no satisfactory substitute for the home visit.
  • The home visit doctors at Health Call in Dubai are also available to attend patients in their office or hotel. However, in the office, only the patient is attending while during the home visit the entire family unit can attend also.
  • Home care by home visit doctors allows a faster discharge from the hospital, is an acceptable alternative for long-term institutional care and for those who suffer a serious and permanent disability, many of whom are elderly; in addition, it is economically more efficient than hospital admission.
  • Patients face their illness better if they remain in a home or familiar environment.
  • For the elderly, the home visit doctors Dubai at Health Call and home care are very satisfactory, especially in the case of having physical disabilities. The entrance into the hospital of an elderly person can have undesirable consequences motivated by the separation of their environment.
  • At home, you can detect conditions that surround the patient and that can be harmful for patient’s health, such as: poor structural condition of the home, inadequate living conditions, accident risks, overcrowding, poor hygiene, family malfunction and insufficient support. The improvements in any of the above conditions can help to improve the patient’s health.
  • The visit of the doctor to the home inspires the patients confidence and security, empathy is achieved superior to the one that can be established in the clinic, the patient feels that the doctor accompanies him in his suffering, that attends him not only as a patient, but as if the Doctor was a family member or friend.
  • Although the science of medicine can probably be exercised more correctly in the well-equipped clinic or hospital environment depending on the circumstances, however, the art of medicine is best applied in the patient’s home, hence the convenience of combining both actions and benefiting the patient.

IV Therapy in Dubai – Worth to Take?

Dieting or an unbalanced diet can often result in nutritional deficiencies that we hardly imagine. Changing the food we consume can cause strange things to occur in our body, so it is fundamental to pay attention to the needs of each body. Meanwhile, the multivitamin supplement industry has been investing more and more in products to contribute to the proper functioning of our body, and that is exactly why the use of IV therapy in Dubai should be analyzed and recognized as a tool to keep your body nourished and immune to external adversities.

A deficiency of vitamins and minerals can result in reactions in your body like fatigue, stress and mood swings. From now on you will be able to better understand how the IV therapy in Dubai offered by Health Call can contribute along with your nutrition to prevent and recover your body from deficiencies of vitamins and nutrients fundamental to your health.

What is an IV therapy?

A multivitamin drip which can promise several benefits, such as improving performance in physical activity, fighting stress and even reducing your weight. However do not think that this therapy is miraculous in the sense that you do not really need to eat well and simply take one IV drip weakly, for example.

It should not be the main tool in a diet but complimentary. It should be used to fill small nutritional deficiencies. It cannot replace the requirements of nutrition taken from food.

It is always advisable to get the nutrients directly from the food, so the IV therapy should be an ally, not primarily responsible for your nutrition. The vitamins and minerals contained in IV drip can contribute to the deficiencies and help with chronic conditions.

Anyone can easily arrange IV therapy in Dubai at his or her home, office or hotel. No need to think too much about it. Just call Health Call and get all IV therapy facilities right to your home, office or hotel along with expert medical doctors and nurses.

Benefits

Several studies have shown the health benefits obtained through the intake of vitamins. Universities in the United States conducted research that looked for evidence of increased bone density and even fracture reduction in postmenopausal women who took Calcium and Vitamin D in balanced quantity.

Most children and teens do not have sufficient Calcium, Potassium and Vitamin D in their diet for good health. It is critical that people seek foods rich in these nutrients, such as vegetables, dairy products, meats and even fruits. Nutrition should be based on food, and IV therapy in Dubai should be recognized only as helper.

It is also worth remembering that in many cases the vitamin’s intake does not offer 100% of the vitamins and minerals that the body needs daily. In the case of vitamin D, for example, the usual supplement is to have about 25% of the daily vitamin D requirement. Therefore, you still need a good feed to get the remaining amount. This is where IV therapy can aid in the supply of these nutrients in cases of deficiency thereof.

The common question is always: Is it worth taking an IV therapy? We would answer Yes, however only as an “extra” supply to your body and when you feel that you need it such as when you have a cold or flu, feeling jet lagged or lethargic or many other ailments which IV therapy could help alleviate. The main sources of vitamins should be the natural foods that should always be present in your everyday meals. IV therapy offered by Health Call may be worth it as an add-on, but it’s important for you to realize that if you compare your effectiveness with food nutrition, it will not be the primary responsible for your body’s balance, so it’s up to you to decide whether it’s worth the investment or not.

Benefits of Glutathione Injection to the Skin – Include This Substance in Your Skin Care Routine

Have you heard of free radicals? They are unstable molecules present in the body that damage the skin due to its high production – which happens mainly when we are exposed to pollution, solar radiation without photo-protection, poor nutrition, among other factors – leading to premature aging. The good news is that we can combat this harmful effect with the use of antioxidants such as Glutathione, the only substances that help neutralize the harmful action of free radicals. We will show you the benefits of using this asset!

For skin to stay healthy and youthful for longer, it is essential to use food or other substances enriched with antioxidants. These actives are able to neutralize free radicals – substances that can damage the body’s healthy cells, accelerating their death and thus speeding up the aging of organs, as is the case with the skin.

Body skin also needs this anti-aging care

It’s not just the face that needs attention in preventing aging of the skin – the body too! Although it takes a little longer, as it is usually not so exposed to solar radiation, this region also ages due to free radical damage, becoming flaccid and depleted.

Glutathione injection Dubai fights and corrects the signs of aging

It helps prevent collagen destruction by free radicals and stimulate the production of new fibers, thus taking corrective action beyond prevention. In this way, Glutathione injection Dubai prevents wrinkles, sagging skin and, consequently, the appearance of new signs of aging. This substance also helps in the bleaching of blemishes, caused by the excessive production of melanin, leaving the skin more luminous, uniform and luscious. The substance can also be used in combination with other active ingredients, such as vitamins and minerals.

Have you seen the wide range of medical, aesthetic and wellbeing services available at Health Call Dubai? Glutathione enhances sun protection

Another important action of this substance is the effectiveness of potentiating protection against UV rays. Although sunscreen is the ideal product for this protection, it does not fully protect the skin against sun damage. Therefore, the regular use of Glutathione after a specific time interval is also important. The substance helps to reduce the impact of solar radiation by protecting the skin against oxidation damage caused by UV and infrared rays.

This substance also protects the skin against the harmful action of pollution

In addition to protect against damage caused by UV and infrared radiation, the combination of Glutathione injection Dubai and sunscreen also protects the skin against the effects of pollution. How does this happen? When this substance is used, this barrier is potentiated, which can prevent premature aging and reduce the impacts of infrared radiation and pollution.

So, you do not have to spend a lot of time to give the body’s skin the care it needs: nowadays, there is Glutathione injection Dubai already enriched in antioxidants that speed up the routine.

And you, have you got Glutathione injection Dubai for your skin care? Remember to consult a medical expert at Health Call to schedule the treatment.

Glutathione Benefits

Overview
Glutathione is an antioxidant produced in cells. It’s comprised largely of three amino acids: glutamine, glycine, and cysteine.

Glutathione levels in the body may be reduced by a number of factors, including poor nutrition, environmental toxins, and stress. Its levels also decline with age.

In addition to being produced naturally by the body, glutathione can be given intravenously, topically, or as an inhalant. It’s also available as an oral supplement in capsule and liquid form. However, oral ingestion of glutathione may not be as effective as intravenous delivery for some conditions.

Glutathione benefits
1. Reduces oxidative stress
Oxidative stress occurs when there’s an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the body’s ability to fight them off. Too-high levels of oxidative stress may be a precursor to multiple diseases. These include diabetes, cancer, and rheumatoid arthritis. Glutathione helps stave off the impact of oxidative stress, which may, in turn, reduce disease.

An article cited in Journal of Cancer Science and Therapy indicated that glutathione deficiency leads to increased levels of oxidative stress, which might lead to cancer. It also stated that elevated glutathione levels raised antioxidant levels and resistance to oxidative stress in cancer cells.

2. May improve psoriasis
A small study indicated that whey protein, when given orally, improved psoriasis with or without additional treatment. Whey protein had been previously demonstrated to increase glutathione levels. Study participants were given 20 grams as an oral supplement daily for three months. Researchers stated that more study is needed.

3. Reduces cell damage in alcoholic and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
Cell death in the liver may be exacerbated by a deficiency in antioxidants, including glutathione. This can lead to fatty liver disease in both those who misuse alcohol and those who don’t. Glutathione has been shown to improve protein, enzyme, and bilirubin levels in the blood of individuals with alcoholic and nonalcoholic chronic fatty liver disease.

A study reported that glutathione was most effective when given to people with fatty liver disease intravenously, in high doses. Participants in the study also showed reductions in malondialdehyde, a marker of cell damage in the liver.

Another small study found that orally administered glutathione had positive effects on people with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease following proactive lifestyle changes. In this study, glutathione was provided in supplement form in a dose of 300 milligrams per day for four months.

4. Improves insulin resistance in older individuals
As people age, they produce less glutathione. Researchers at Baylor School of Medicine used a combination of animal and human studies to explore the role of glutathione in weight management and insulin resistance in older individuals. Study findings indicated that low glutathione levels were associated with less fat burning and higher rates of fat storing in the body.

Older subjects had cysteine and glycine added to their diets to increase glutathione levels, which spiked within two weeks, improving insulin resistance and fat burning.

5. Increases mobility for people with peripheral artery disease
Peripheral artery disease occurs when the peripheral arteries become clogged by plaque. It most commonly happens in the legs. One study reported that glutathione improved circulation, increasing the ability of study participants to walk pain-free for longer distances. Participants receiving glutathione rather than a saline solution placebo were given intravenous infusions two times daily for five days, and then analyzed for mobility.

6. Reduces symptoms of Parkinson’s disease
Parkinson’s disease affects the central nervous system and is defined by symptoms such as tremors. It currently has no cure. One older study documented intravenous glutathione’s positive effects on symptoms such as tremors and rigidity. While more research is needed, this case report suggests that glutathione may help reduce symptoms, improving quality of life in people with this disease.

7. May help fight against autoimmune disease
The chronic inflammation caused by autoimmune diseases can increase oxidative stress. These diseases include rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease, and lupus. According to one study, glutathione helps reduce oxidative stress by either stimulating or reducing the body’s immunological response. Autoimmune diseases attack the mitochondria in specific cells. Glutathione works to protect cell mitochondria by eliminating free radicals.

8. May reduce oxidative damage in children with autism
Several studies, including a clinical trial reported in Medical Science Monitor, indicate that children with autism have higher levels of oxidative damage and lower levels of glutathione in their brain. This increased susceptibility to neurological damage in children with autism from substances such as mercury.

The eight-week clinical trial on children aged 3 to 13 used oral or transdermal applications of glutathione. Autistic symptom changes were not evaluated as part of the study, but children in both groups showed improvement in cysteine, plasma sulfate, and whole-blood glutathione levels.

9. May reduce the impact of uncontrolled diabetes
Long-term high blood sugar is associated with reduced amounts of glutathione. This can lead to oxidative stress and tissue damage. A study found that dietary supplementation with cysteine and glycine boosted glutathione levels. It also lowered oxidative stress and damage in people with uncontrolled diabetes, despite high sugar levels. Study participants were placed on 0.81 millimoles per kilogram (mmol/kg) of cysteine and 1.33 mmol/kg glycine daily for two weeks.

10. May reduce respiratory disease symptoms
N-acetylcysteine is a medication used to treat conditions such as asthma and cystic fibrosis. As an inhalant, it helps to thin mucus and make it less paste-like. It also reduces inflammation. N-acetylcysteine is byproduct of glutathione.

Glutathione is found in some foods, although cooking and pasteurization diminish its levels significantly. Its highest concentrations are in:

raw or very rare meat
unpasteurized milk and other unpasteurized dairy products
freshly-picked fruits and vegetables, such as avocado, and asparagus.

Forms
Glutathione contains sulfur molecules, which may be why foods high in sulfur help to boost its natural production in the body. These foods include:

cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and bok choy
allium vegetables, such as garlic and onions
eggs
nuts
legumes
lean protein, such as fish, and chicken
Other foods and herbs that help to naturally boost glutathione levels include:

milk thistle
flaxseed
guso seaweed
whey
Glutathione is also negatively affected by insomnia. Getting enough rest on a regular basis can help increase levels.

Side effects and risks
A diet rich in glutathione-boosting foods does not pose any risks. However, taking supplements may not be advisable for everyone. Talk to your doctor about glutathione to determine if it’s right for you. Possible side effects may include:

abdominal cramps
bloating
trouble breathing due to bronchial constriction
allergic reactions, such as rash

Takeaway
Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant that’s made in the body’s cells. Its levels decrease as a result of aging, stress, and toxin exposure. Boosting glutathione may provide many health benefits, including reduction of oxidative stress.

Vitamin D: the miracle cure?

As a lack of vitamin D is linked to various diseases and the return of rickets, Glenda Cooper discovers why a winter top-up is good for you

There is a miracle substance that has been linked to beating cancer, heart disease, tuberculosis and diabetes. It doesn’t cost anything, can be made within minutes, and lasts in the body for months.

And while it is readily available in the south of England, it is denied to those in Scotland and the North.

The substance? Vitamin D, created when the skin is exposed to sunlight. And far too few of us are getting enough of it. While experts recommend that we produce between five and 25 micrograms per day, 90 per cent of adults in the UK make less than three.

The situation is worst for those north of around 52 degrees latitude – a line level with Birmingham – because the winter sun is too weak for this vital vitamin to be produced. Yet many of the rest of us have either been scared by the threat of skin cancer into staying out of the sun, or do not eat enough oily fish, another source of the vitamin.

By failing to get enough, we are not only missing out on protection from killer diseases, but exposing ourselves to conditions such as rickets, a disease prevalent in Victorian slums that had been largely eradicated in the 1950s.

“No one is paying this any attention,” warns consultant paediatrician Dr Colin Michie, of Ealing Hospital in west London, who sees a new case of rickets every month and seizures linked to a lack of vitamin D every two weeks. “It’s completely preventable, and getting worse.

The children I see are the tip of the iceberg; there will be lots out there not getting enough vitamin D. That is a real public health problem which will have ramifications in the future.”

Compared to the attention A, C, and E enjoy, vitamin D has largely been overlooked. This is perhaps because it works in a different way: while we get the others directly from food, vitamin D can be produced when the skin is exposed to sunlight.

It can, unlike vitamin C, remain in the body for months, because it is soluble in fat. And we are only just beginning to understand its full benefits.

Last week, a report in the prestigious US journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences revealed that people with higher levels were more likely to survive colon, breast and lung cancer. This follows last year’s University of San Diego review of 40 years of research, which revealed that a daily dose could halve the risk of breast and bowel cancer.

Other claims are that it reduces the risk of heart disease (a study of 10,000 women in California found that those who took supplements had a 31 per cent lower risk of dying from it), diabetes (in a Finnish study of 12,000 children, it cut their chance of developing Type A diabetes by 80 per cent), even colds and flu (New Yorkers who took vitamin D had flu 70 per cent less often).

Yet despite this increasingly compelling evidence, too many of us are not getting enough. The result: a resurgence in rickets, which stunts growth and deforms the skeleton, causing bowed legs.

In Birmingham Children’s Hospital, doctors report seeing children with swollen ankles and wrists and the “rachitic rosary” – swellings around the bone and cartilage in the ribs that look like rosary beads.

In Bradford, £50,000 has been spent in giving vitamin drops to all children under five after a four-year study found that more than 300 children were deficient in vitamin D. Another study in Bristol found similar figures.

One of those who went into their doctors’ surgery in Bristol was Ilhan Omar, now 13. Her mother Maryan said she first took her daughter to the doctor when she was nine.

“Ilhan started complaining that her legs hurt,” she said. “They would hurt for about 15-20 minutes at a time. Sometimes she was finding it difficult to walk. I could not think what might be wrong with her.”

Ilhan was given a vitamin D injection and now takes daily tablets. She was lucky she had a doctor who recognised the warning signs before she became permanently deformed. She was in particular danger because of two things: her skin colour and her dress.

Originally from Somalia, Ilhan requires more sun to create enough vitamin D via her skin. It is thought that up to one in 100 ethnic minority children in this country may suffer from rickets. This was compounded by the fact that both Maryan and Ilhan covered up by wearing the hijab; Ilhan now does not wear her hijab to school.

“Families from ethnic minorities and who wear religious dress are particularly at risk,” says Julie Mytton, a Bristol GP. “These communities may not be aware that there are free vitamin supplements available. But actually, anyone can be at risk if they don’t get enough sun and aren’t eating a good diet.”

Although children are at risk because skin cancer fears keep them indoors in sunny weather, elderly people living in residential homes may also be vulnerable. So are pregnant women: if they do not have sufficiently high levels of vitamin D, it can stunt healthy bone formation in their child.

Dr Mytton believes that vitamin D may not have got the profile it deserves because – put bluntly – there’s no money in it.

“A single injection that lasts six months costs £10, and people can make it from sunlight or get it from their diet,” she says. “You have to ask whether it’s been neglected in the past because it’s not commercially valuable.”

Yet that may be changing. The Department of Health offers free drops containing vitamin D to children up to the age of four, and to pregnant women whose families are on benefits.

A study carried out by Chris Griffiths, professor of primary Care at Barts teaching hospital in east London, has found that a dose of the vitamin strengthens the immune system against tuberculosis; a further study is under way to see whether giving vitamin D supplements (at 60p per dose) would help clear up TB cases more quickly, thereby limiting its spread and cutting the number of new cases per year from 8,000.

“This is potentially a very big step forward,” says Prof Griffiths. “Particularly as there are growing concerns about antibacterial resistance to TB. This could prove very effective.”

The experts also warn that while sunshine is the easiest and cheapest way to get enough vitamin D, this should not mean a return to tanning: a few minutes of exposure would be enough.

“If you walk to work or go for a lunchtime stroll, that will be as much as you need,” says Ed Yong of Cancer Research UK. “You should certainly not stay out so long that you start to tan or burn.”

• 90 per cent of the body’s supply of vitamin D is generated by reaction to sunlight on the skin.

• Vitamin D is found in oily fish like sardines, salmon, mackerel and tuna, cod liver oil, and in milk, cheese, eggs and liver.

• “Healthy Start” supplements for children up to the age of four are given free to those on benefits but can also be bought for £1.70 at pharmacies or health clinics.

• The first mention of rickets is credited to Daniel Whistler, an English doctor who wrote a paper in 1645 on the subject.

• Vitamin D was named in 1922 by the American biochemist Elmer McCollum, who performed experiments to find the nutrients within cod liver oil. It was so called because it was the fourth substance he identified.

• One in 100 children from ethnic minorities in this country is thought to be deficient in vitamin D; darker skin requires more sun to produce the vitamin.

• In 2003 a New York couple were convicted of endangering the life of their 15-month-old baby after subjecting her to a strict vegan diet which left her suffering from rickets. Silva and Joseph Swinton were sentenced to six and five years in jail.

• The classic signs of rickets are bow legs caused by softening of the bones; if not detected early surgery is needed to correct it.

• Most people can make enough vitamin D in the summer to last them through the winter months.

Oxygen Therapy

Oxygen treatment of headaches was first mentioned in literature in 1939. Mr. Charles E. Rhein, Linde Air Products Co., reported to Dr. Alvarez at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN the successful treatment of severe “migraine” attacks by breathing pure oxygen. Subsequently, Dr. Alvarez noted that the treatment with 100 percent oxygen at a flow of six to eight liters a minute would often produce relief. Sometimes patients would not be able to obtain relief with this treatment, whereas at other times they would. In 1940, Dr. Alvarez reported the treatment of over 100 persons suffering from headache attacks. They were treated with oxygen with a nasal type of mask and a flow of six to eight liters a minute. He found that 80 percent of “migrainous” headaches were completely or significantly relieved. Dr. Alvarez also found that patients with other types of headaches were often helped through the use of oxygen inhalation and that the prompt institution of therapy had a better chance of resulting in relief than if it was delayed. This work was much less rigorous than that done recently.

The first significant work done on oxygen inhalation was that of Dr. Kudrow who investigated patients with cluster headaches. Fifty-two out-patients were treated with 100 percent oxygen at a flow of seven liters per minute. 75 percent of these patients had “complete or almost complete cessation of head pain within 15 minutes: for at least seven of 10 attacks.” Dr. Kudrow found that there is greater effect of oxygen inhalation in patients with episodic cluster. Patients younger than 50 years of age appeared to have a better response than those above age 50. However, this was not considered statistically significant. Also of interest was that 62 percent of those responding to oxygen had their attacks relieved within seven minutes of starting therapy. Dr. Kudrow did a second trial in a crossover fashion, comparing sublingual ergotamine tartrate and oxygen inhalation in the abortive treatment of cluster headache. Fifty patients selected at random used either 100 percent oxygen or the ergotamine to treat their headaches. After 10 cluster headaches were treated with one modality the patient then used the other treatment for 10 headaches. Eighty-two percent of the subjects found at least seven out of 10 cluster headaches were successfully relieved by the oxygen, while 70 percent treated their headaches successfully with ergotamine. These results were not considered statistically different.

Dr. Fogan studied 19 patients with cluster headache in the most rigorous fashion possible through a double-blind crossover study comparing oxygen versus air inhalation. He found there was a significant difference in the relief obtained in those patients inhaling oxygen versus air. By making this comparison Dr. Fogan was able to be sure that the oxygen was the significant factor in successfully treating the cluster headaches. He eliminated the other associated factors involved with the inhalation of a gas, such as the gas tank and the oxygen mask.

The way in which oxygen inhalation reduces headache pain is unknown. Researchers have shown that there is an increased blood flow in the brain in both cluster and migraine headaches, although both headaches do not have the same degree of increased flow. It has been shown that oxygen causes a marked decrease in cerebral blood flow that is coincident with the reduced degree of pain in cluster headache.

While it is clear that oxygen is a very useful therapy in cluster headaches, its utility in migraine headaches is less well documented. It is unlikely that the literature of the 1930s and 1940s was able to distinguish between migraine and cluster headaches. Thus, any belief ascribed to migraine headaches in that era could have confused patients with cluster headaches with those of migraine headaches. Some investigators have found it useful, however, to use oxygen therapy in patients with migraine headaches. I have found approximately 50 percent of my patients with migraine headaches will be able to achieve some relief with oxygen therapy. They use 100 percent oxygen for eight to nine liters a minute for up to 30 minutes. If no effect has been achieved by that time, it is unlikely that one will occur.

The side effects of oxygen inhalation are rare. Cluster headache patients are very often smokers and if one should happen to light up while an oxygen tank is open, the result can be explosive. Another side effect of oxygen use was found by Dr. Kudrow who noticed that 25 percent of his study patients had rebound cluster headaches after oxygen inhalation therapy. No other side effects have been found and therefore, oxygen therapy is safe. Oxygen could be preferred to ergotamine’s use since ergotamine often causes nausea and vomiting as well as a sense of unreality and leg cramps. Ergotamine cannot be used in patients with hypertension, peripheral vascular disease or infections when oxygen obviously can be. It has been suggested that oxygen therapy when used together with ergotamine will give greater relief than the sum of the effect found by using either one alone.

Oxygen therapy is not a well-known modality for headache patients. Many physicians are unaware of the benefits of oxygen therapy, as are third-party payers who hesitate to reimburse for its use. Sometimes this can be overcome by a letter from the treating physician. Since approximately 50 percent of patients respond to oxygen therapy, it is worth trying it before going to the expense and effort of having an oxygen tank installed in one’s home.

What is IV vitamin therapy?

When Annie first suggested the topic of IV vitamin therapy as a blog post I’ll admit I didn’t know much about it. After delving into her background and finding that she’d cured herself from chronic migraines using natural therapies I was interested to find out more. Annie is a qualified naturopathic practitioner and today we’re lucky that she’s sharing her knowledge about the little known area of IV vitamin therapy. – Elly xx

What is IV vitamin therapy?
Licensed naturopathic physicians use IV vitamin therapy as a tool to replenish a patient’s micronutrient and nutritional status. Studies have found that IV vitamins can be a great way to improve many health conditions and achieve optimal health and wellness. IV vitamin therapy is an effective and efficient treatment at replenishing vitamins and minerals because it bypasses the digestive system, allowing for 100 percent absorption.

Food or medications such as multivitamins, must be chewed or swallowed whole. They pass down the esophagus to the stomach where the acidic environment begins the breakdown. The small intestine then starts the process of digestion and absorption. Enzymes break the food stuff down into their smaller molecular pieces, and eventually to amino acids (the building blocks of proteins).

The small intestine absorbs these amino acids, and passes them into the blood where they are carried to the liver. The liver acts as our primary detoxification organ. It receives everything that we put into our body and processes it to be transported in the blood or excreted as urine or stool.

Assimilating the vitamins and minerals from our food is a long and complex process. There are many steps that can be interrupted, and this is where vitamin IV therapy comes in.100 percent absorption is ensured through IV vitamin therapy because the vitamins and minerals can be administered directly to the blood. Therefore, many different types of patients can benefit from vitamin therapy, and much more efficiently than by taking food or medication orally.

What is a Myer’s cocktail?
A Myer’s cocktail is a Nutritional IV Therapy. It is named so after Dr. John Myer and is commonly misnamed a ‘Meyer’s cocktail.’

It is unknown what the true “Myer’s cocktail” was, as there was no written account of the exact treatment. Patients of John Myer reported that he used a 10-mL syringe to perform a slow vitamin push of various nutrients into the vein. Today, IV nutrient therapy or IV vitamins is used interchangeably with the name Myer’s cocktail and consists of various different vitamins and minerals in combination to treat specific diseases. The Myer’s cocktail is now done in an IV bag, rather than a vitamin push from a syringe. The patient receives more hydration and nutrients this way.

Common nutrients found in IV vitamin therapy are:

Ascorbic acid (vitamin C)
B complex
Magnesium chloride
Calcium chloride
The Myer’s cocktail can be personalized to any patient for their specific needs. For example, a “migraine cocktail” can be formulated for a patient suffering from chronic migraines.

The Myer’s cocktail also differs from a ‘banana bag,’ which is administered in the hospital. This is because it it has many more vitamins and minerals and it is formulated to treat specific conditions for each individual patient. A typical banana bag contains thiamine (vitamin B1), folic acid, and magnesium sulfate and is in either normal saline or dextrose water.

What are the benefits of IV vitamins?
The benefits of IV vitamin therapy are many! As discussed above, nutrients traveling through the digestive system can have many interruptions or problems. Because IV vitamin therapy bypasses this system, 100 percent absorption of the vitamins and minerals can be achieved. For this reason, vitamin IV therapy can correct micronutrient deficiencies. This improves the overall nutritional status of an individual, allowing for the relief of many symptoms.

Some benefits include:

Increased energy
Reduced symptoms of stress
Improved hydration
Regulation of the immune system, improving the symptoms of chronic illnesses and treating autoimmune disease flare-ups
Improved skin quality
Reduction in headaches
Improved symptoms of depression
Improved symptoms of asthma
Shortened recovery time for athletes, optimal performance, improved endurance
Relieves allergies, colds and flus

Is IV nutrient therapy safe?
Nutritional IV therapy is safe when administered by a qualified practitioner who has completed the certification course and knows how to calculate the osmolarity of the solution being administered. Our practitioners at Bay Wellness in Vancouver have completed the relevant qualifications to be able to administer IV vitamin therapy safely.

Some individuals get a feeling of warmth from nutrient pushes, most likely due to the magnesium and/or calcium. However this is rarely found to be intolerable. It is also important that the patient has eaten something before being administered IV vitamins because the B vitamins can cause nausea if given on an empty stomach.

Rapid administration of magnesium can also lead to hypotension (low blood pressure). In this case, the IV is stopped until symptoms resolve and from there it can be administered more slowly.

The elderly and frail patients require special consideration. For them, the IV or the vitamin push can be administered more slowly. Alternatively, IM injections can be performed instead to avoid any adverse effects such as hypotension. Special attention should be paid to those patients taking diuretic medications who are losing excess potassium. This is because the administration of magnesium can then cause adverse effects.

Patients who suffer from renal disease or renal failure, and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency have an increased risk of adverse effects. All patients should be tested for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency before receiving 10 grams or more of ascorbic acid.

Who can benefit from nutritional IV therapy?
Everybody can benefit from vitamin drips! Today, most people are under chronic stress, not getting enough sleep or adequate nutrition, and are feeling run-down, tired and in pain. Vitamin IV therapy is a great way to address any deficiencies in vitamins or minerals and reach optimal nutrient levels and hydration status.

In acute cases, vitamin IV therapy is a great tool to treat migraines, headaches, colds, flus, seasonal allergies, morning sickness during pregnancy, fatigue and hangovers.

In chronic cases, IV therapy can be used to treat diseases such as:

Rheumatoid arthritis
Cancer
Crohn’s disease
IBS/IBD
Ulcerative colitis
Lupus
Chronic fatigue syndrome
Asthma
Depression
Drug addiction
Fibromyalgia
Adrenal insufficiency or adrenal fatigue

No matter how clean you eat, food today doesn’t have the same nutrient density that it once did. Therefore IV nutrition therapy can be a fantastic place to start to receive the missing nutrients. Furthermore, for nutrients to reach the blood, food has to be digested and absorbed efficiently. Gut health must be optimal for this to occur.

How much does IV vitamin therapy cost?
Vitamin infusion therapy varies in cost from clinic to clinic. At our clinic, Bay Wellness Centre the cost is $150. The average cost can range from $120-$200. It will be higher reaching in some cases of cancer-specific treatments with very high doses of vitamin C. These types of treatments should only be done by FABNO trained naturopathic physicians.

Where can I get IV nutrition therapy done?
Naturopathic doctors’ offices can provide IV vitamin therapy if they have completed the extra training and certification. They also need to be located in provinces and states where it is licensed.

The Benefits of Nutrient IV Therapy

Vitamin C Benefits

What is vitamin C?
Vitamin C (also known as ascorbic acid) is abundant in vegetables and fruits. A water-soluble vitamin and powerful antioxidant, it helps the body form and maintain connective tissue, including bones, blood vessels, and skin.

What does vitamin C do? What are some vitamin C benefits?
Vitamin C helps to repair and regenerate tissues, protect against heart disease, aid in the absorption of iron, prevent scurvy, and decrease total and LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and triglycerides. Research indicates that vitamin C may help protect against a variety of cancers by combating free radicals, and helping neutralize the effects of nitrites (preservatives found in some packaged foods that may raise the risk of certain forms of cancer). Supplemental vitamin C may also lessen the duration and symptoms of a common cold, help delay or prevent cataracts, and support healthy immune function.

What are the signs of a vitamin C deficiency?
Deficiency symptoms include fatigue, muscle weakness, joint and muscle aches, bleeding gums, and leg rashes. Prolonged deficiency can cause scurvy, a rare but potentially severe illness.

How much, and what kind, does an adult need?
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the recommended vitamin C daily allowance (RDA) for adults over age 19 is:

men, 90 mg per day
women, 75 mg per day
pregnant women, 85 mg per day
breastfeeding women, 120 mg per day.
Smokers may benefit from a higher intake. Dr. Weil recommends taking 250 mg of vitamin C each day.

How much does a child need?
NIH recommends Adequate Intakes (AIs):

infants 0-6 months old, 40 mg per day
infants 7-12 months old, 50 mg per day.
The RDAs of vitamin C for teens and children are:

toddlers 1-3 years old, 15 mg per day
children 4-8 years old, 25 mg per day
children 9-13 years old, 45 mg per day
male teens 14-18 years old, 75 mg per day
female teens 14-18 years old, 65 mg per day
How do you get enough vitamin C from foods?
Vitamin C is easy to get through foods, as many fruits and vegetables contain vitamin C. Good sources include: apples, asparagus, berries, broccoli, cabbage, melon (cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon), cauliflower, citrus fruits (lemons, limes, oranges), kiwi, fortified foods (breads, grains, cereal), dark leafy greens (kale, spinach), peppers (especially red bell peppers, which have among the highest per-serving vitamin C content), potatoes, and tomatoes.

Are there any risks associated with too much vitamin C?
When obtained from food sources and supplements in the recommended dosages, vitamin C is generally regarded as safe. Side effects are rarely reported, but include diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramps, and other gastrointestinal symptoms. For most healthy individuals, the body can only hold and use about 200-250 mg of vitamin C a day, and any excess is lost though urine. At times of illness, during recovery from injury, or under conditions of increased oxidative stress (including smoking), the body can use greater amounts. High doses of vitamin C (greater than 2,000 mg/day) may contribute to the formation of kidney stones, as well as cause severe diarrhea, nausea, and gastritis.

Are there any other special considerations?
Adverse affects may occur between vitamin C and anticoagulant drugs such as warfarin (Coumadin), decreasing their action. Nicotine products, oral contraceptives/estrogens, tetracyclines, barbiturates, and aspirin may decrease levels of vitamin C.

Vitamin C may increase absorption of iron and lutein. Although some evidence suggests that large doses of supplemental vitamin C may interfere with the absorption and metabolism of vitamin B12 found in food, other studies have shown no such effects.

Oxygen – A Breath Of Fresh Air!

Tired, stressed, run down and basically feel like crap most of the time? These are symptoms which so many of us are dealing with constantly, yet our fast paced, hectic lifestyles don’t always give us the opportunity to sit back, adjust and get healthy.

Wellness and good health is a huge trend right now. Get fit, eat healthier, eat better, sleep more are all things we are told to do. We try to do them, some of us even categorically do do them, but sometimes it feels like is doesn’t seem to make any difference.

I recently popped in the Health Call at JLT to discuss a totally different matter. As Dr Arash Arabghani and I chatted, I wanted to know more about the more popular treatments and therapies the clinic offered. He said that Oxygen Therapy had not only saw an increase in popularity, but that people were feeling genuine benefits that caused them to come back time and time again.

Oxygen feed the body, supports the immune system, destroys toxic substances and supports cell growth.

Now, to somebody of my age, when you mention oxygen, your mind throws you back to 90’s when Oxygen Bars were all the trend and Michael Jackson even slept in an oxygen chamber.

Don’t we breath oxygen like all the time?? Well yes, but it’s only around 20% pure oxygen, Think of all the pollution and yuk we inhale every moment. This type of oxygen allows the body to absorb around 90% of clean oxygen. By doing so, you send a more concentrated dose of oxygen to your muscles, brain and cells. NOT more (as some places claim), your body can’t actually absorb extra oxygen!.

What can it do? It can:
heighten concentration, alertness and memory
give you energy
aid your immune system, thinking and sight
help to promote healing and speed up body’s recovery
help with headaches and migraines
lessen fatigue and feeling generally unwell
give a better sleep pattern

After a 30 min session, I was overly excited to see what differences it made as I suffer from all of the above.

I have to say that after a few hours, my head felt clearer, less noisy and less heavy. I felt I wasn’t as sluggish and just over all brighter. So if I was asked if it had any benefits, I’d say yes! The effect only lasted that afternoon and I am sure you would see additional results if you undertook this on a regular basis.

Info – as provided by Health Call Dubai based in JLT

How long does it take? Our doctors do not recommend more than 30 minutes of high concentration oxygen per day.

How much does it cost? Medical grade Oxygen (what you received) costs 290aed in clinic for 30 minutes and 490aed at home. Oxygen Bar (lower concentration) is around 90aed/10min, 120aed/20min, 150aed/30min.

How frequently should / can you do it? As long as you don’t do more than 30 minutes per day you can do it as often as you like, we have clients that receive it daily

Apart from your clinic, where can people try this? We are located in Rixos Palm every Thurs – Saturday from 10am – 7pm. However Ramadan timings will start later in the evening and end later at night. We are launching with CityWalk around September since it is an outdoor setting.

All that’s left to do, is breathe!
